Say Goodbye to those ugly black lines, dark teeth & swollen gums. You’ve seen those black lines at the top of crowns that look very unnatural. There are several reasons why this happens. The lines can be cause by metal under that crown that blocks natural light from the tooth. It can be from earlier trauma to a tooth that has deadened the tooth and turned it dark. Or it can be from a reaction of the gums to the metal around the crown. Many people have metal reactions that cause the gums to swell, but the swelling is blamed on poor hygiene or gum disease. Most of these problems can be treated by new techniques that utilize all-porcelain restorations.
Porcelain and ceramic crowns and bridges are the ultimate solution at mimicking appearance of natural teeth. They are 100% biocompatible, metal-free, hypoallergenic, translucent, and naturally looking. New technology allows for creation of very strong and long lasting restorations. Current materials include zirconia or lithium disilicate and are manufactured under various trade names.
Limitations of porcelain
Because metal free crowns and bridges rely entirely on the strength of porcelain they are most often used to restore front teeth. In molar area hybrid (porcelain fused to gold) restorations provide better longevity and resistance to biting forces, current ceramic materials, however, are suitable to be used in any area of the mouth. Frequently, nightly use of a niteguard will be indicated to protect ceramic restorations from clenching forces.
Dr. Preis will be happy to discuss with you pros and cons of metal free restorations in your case.
